Pasadena Eye Medical Group


teamPasadena Eye Medical Group was established in 1979 when Dr. Meriel Wu joined Dr. Ralph Riffenburgh. After a distinguished and exemplary 60-year career, Dr. Riffenburgh retired in 2014. Dr. David Yu joined in 1992, bringing corneal sub-specialty training to the growing practice. After many years of solo practice in Pasadena, Dr. Gerald Bowns decided to merge his practice with PEMG in 2001, adding pediatric ophthalmology expertise to the group. Dr. Airian Thai became a part of our practice in 2013, providing optometric and specialty contact lens services for our patients. Dr. Arbi Khemichian was recruited from a busy practice in 2014, bringing additional corneal sub-specialty training to the growing office.

We are dedicated to providing outstanding ophthalmologic care both medically and surgically.  We work with the latest eye care equipment and are constantly advancing our education in order to provide the best care for our patients.  We constantly strive to carry on our well-established reputation of being dependable, responsible, and deserving of our patients’ trust.


Our practice is affiliated with two leading hospitals, Huntington Memorial and City of Hope. We provide consultation services and emergency coverage, and conduct protocol ophthalmic examinations for City of Hope cancer drug trials.


Pasadena Eye Medical Group consists of four highly trained and experienced surgeons, with an optometrist, and an optical dispensary. We offer a comprehensive range of ophthalmic procedures, including advanced cataract surgery, laser and minimally invasive glaucoma procedures, LASIK, corneal transplantation, and eyelid procedures. We diagnose and medically treat a wide range of eye conditions, and also conduct vision examinations, dispense glasses, and contact lenses.
